"I remember meeting Akiko, on a September afternoon in San Francisco, when she came to my show of ‘The White Horse’ at the Berggruen Gallery. ... This special commission came from that first meeting. We discussed our passion for horses and she spoke to me about her Olympic horse Ravel. My work has always been about finding the most resonant, least obvious moments and she understood that. My process isn’t instantaneous. Dressage horses are usually under scrutiny, they are the super models of the equestrian world. There is a regimen, a code, a rhythm. My job was to find the essence of the these horses in offbeat, precious moments that reveals their souls. I spent the week at the stables with Ravel and his three offspring. This study reflects a natural and purely personal viewing of these incredible horses." Mary
